Apart form showing the Chateau´s name, the corks also depict a crown and ferret which apparently allude to the royal lineage of the man who originally had this Chateau built as his hunting lodge. According to legend the estate´s name goes back either to a quote by English poet Lord Byron or by the no less famous Franch author Baudelaire. After enjoying a Moulis wine Byron apparently felt rid of all his troubles and coined the phrase "chasser le spleen", ("chasing away the bad mood"). As early as 1850 the estate was classified as a third growth by critic Charles Cocks which was confirmed by the official classification of 1855. After an eventful history the Chateau fell into a kind of hibernation from which it did not awake until the end of the 1950s. Monsieur Chayoux, then owner of the Chateau as well as Champagne house Ayala and former owner of Chateau Phelan Segur, started a renovation programme which once again enabled the production of long-lived, expressive wines in the true style of La Lagune. Thanks to carefully preserved parchment deuments, Chateau Lanessan´s history can be safely date back to 15 January 1310. During the reign of the English King Edward, the Duke of Guyenne, Lady Paironne la Montagne, widow of Henry de Lanessan, sold the estate to the Seigneur de Blaignan. In 1793 the Delbos family became the owners of this esteemed cru. The estate was overlooked for the 1855 classification as Louis Delbos had not provided sample bottles descendants.
