Mountain Cellar

Countless stacks of wooden wine cases from Bordeaux reaching up to the ceiling and towering rows of barriques lining the walls time and again inspire the awe of  visitors as they enter our impressive mountain cellar.  The best wines grown on our own estate mature here alongside the fine imported wines in unique conditions – during concerts and events they provide an impressively picturesque backdrop.

Old Kaiserstuhl caves were our inspiration for drilling the cellars of Weingut Franz Keller Schwarzer Adler 112m deep into the rocks like an Alpine tunnel underneath the loess layer.  Windows dug into the loess regulate the airflow and optimal humidity in the parallel ducts which retain an almost unvarying, natural, constant temperature of 12 degrees Celsius throughout the year, without any air-conditioning.  Such ideal conditions for the storage and maturation of the wine treasures that are kept here are rarely found elsewhere.  A small but impressive proof for this exceptional quality are longstanding French clients of Weinhandel Franz Keller Schwarzer Adler who regularly purchase first-rate Bordeaux and Burgundy wines after they matured in our Kaiserstuhl mountain cellar.
